A Midsummer Night's Dream Audition Update!

Auditions will be held on Tuesday, August 30 after school in the Black Box Theatre. For those of you who don't know where that is, it's the big, black room at the end of the F wing. If needed, call backs will be on Wednesday, August 31. Audition scenes and forms have been posted and should be available to the right of the screen. I'll make every effort to make sure documents are readable and printable from both Macs an PCs, but since I'll be posting from a Mac, there might a a few minor technical snags. If you can't open a document, send me an email at april.rames@kaneland.org

If you are unfamiliar with the play it would be a good idea to watch or read it before auditions. If you'd prefer to watch it, I'd suggest the 1999 version starting Kevin Kline. It is rated PG-13 because of some very brief rear nudity but is otherwise family friendly.

Things to keep in mind as you prepare for your audition:

1. BE HONEST ABOUT CONFLICTS. We will need to maximize our rehearsal time for this production. This means you need to be available when you say you are available. Of course I understand that emergencies and illnesses pop up. I certainly don't want you coming to rehearsal while vomiting. However, if you have committed yourself to a sport, club, job, family vacation or whatever, you need to let me know that ahead of time. Claiming to be completely free at auditions and then admitting you can only make one rehearsal a week will not endear you to the heart of your director or those of your fellow cast members.

2. DO NOT MEMORIZE THE SCENES. I do not expect you to do cold readings of Shakespeare. However, this does not mean you should memorize the scenes which will be posted shortly. Even if you have your heart set on auditioning for a certain character, that might not be the character I ask you to read. You should read through all of the posted scenes so that you are familiar and comfortable with them. Be prepared to read any role but don't waste time memorizing any of them.

3. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A WAY HOME. Unfortunately, I can't give you an estimate of how long auditions will run until I have a better idea of how many people will be auditioning. If things start to run a bit too long, there is a very good chance we'll have call backs on Wednesday, August 31. I will try to let you know about 30 minutes before we'll be done so rides can be called.

4. IF YOU ARE NOT CALLED BACK FOR WEDNESDAY'S AUDITION THAT DOES NOT MEAN YOU WEREN'T CAST. If the need arrises, call backs will be on Wednesday, August 31. If your name is not on the call back list it does not mean you absolutely were not cast. It just means I don't need to see you again. Some characters will definitely be cast Tuesday night and I won't need to see those actors on Wednesday. If we have call backs, the full cast list will be posted on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 1. If we don't have call backs, the full cast list will be posted on WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31.

5. TAKE YOUR CONTRACT SERIOUSLY. You will held responsible for everything listed on your contract. Failing to fulfill it can result in recasting or loss of future theatre opportunities.
